Meet Shadow & Dexter: The Dogs Behind We Wagging Tails

Meet Shadow & Dexter: The Dogs Behind We Wagging Tails

Every brand has an origin story. Most of them start with a gap in the market, a business plan, a spreadsheet. Ours started with a spontaneous phone call, a shelter dog with anxious eyes, a friend giving away puppies, and a family that had no idea their lives were about to be completely, wonderfully taken over by two dogs.

This is the story of Shadow and Dexter — and how they turned a frustrated family of dog parents into the founders of We Wagging Tails.

How Shadow Came Home (A Phone Call She Wasn't Expecting)

Let's be honest about how Shadow joined our family: it was not a carefully planned decision.

It was October 2019. Angelo had been volunteering at a local shelter for a while — walking dogs, spending time with animals waiting for their forever homes. One evening, he came across a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, two and a half years old, with ears too big for his face and eyes that held something heavy in them. Something that said life had not always been easy.

He called his wife that same night. "I found the most beautiful dog," he told her. "I'm bringing him home."

She was skeptical. Reasonably so. This was not exactly a joint decision. But Shadow came home that night anyway — and within days, it was impossible to imagine the house without him.

That is Shadow. Small enough to fit in your lap, big enough to fill every room he walks into.

Shadow: The Little Dog with the Biggest Heart (And the Highest Standards)

Shadow arrived carrying the weight of an uncertain past. His anxiety was evident from the beginning — he startled easily, needed time to trust, and had a way of watching you from across the room, assessing whether you were safe before he would let himself relax.

We were patient. We were consistent. We learned his language. And slowly, steadily, Shadow began to unfold.

What unfolded was a personality of remarkable complexity. Shadow is opinionated in ways that are genuinely impressive for a dog his size. He has preferences about where he sits, what he eats, which humans are worth his time, and — most famously — where his paws make contact with the ground. The stepping stones in our backyard exist largely because of Shadow. He will tiptoe along them with the precision of a tightrope walker rather than allow his pristine paws to touch the grass, the dirt, or — heaven forbid — anything wet. This is a dog with standards. Exceptionally high ones.

But beneath the standards and the opinions is a dog of extraordinary loyalty. Once Shadow decides you are his person, you are his person completely. He follows Angelo's wife from room to room with a quiet devotion that has never wavered in the years since he came home. He is not demonstrative about it — he does not demand attention or perform affection. He simply stays close, a small warm presence that has become as much a part of the house as the walls themselves.

Caring for an anxious dog also taught us something we had not expected: the gear matters enormously. Shadow's anxiety expressed itself physically — he was a stress-chewer, going through beds and toys with quiet determination when the world felt like too much. He was also, despite his size, a Houdini-level escape artist. Standard collars? He would back out of them in seconds. Harnesses that were not perfectly fitted? Gone before you made it to the end of the driveway.

Finding products that could keep Shadow safe, comfortable, and contained — without looking like they had survived a demolition site — became a part-time job. We needed things that were secure enough to hold him, soft enough to comfort him, and durable enough to survive his anxiety-driven chewing. The market, we quickly discovered, was not built for dogs like Shadow. Products were either durable or beautiful. Secure or comfortable. Affordable or quality. Rarely all of the above. That frustration planted a seed. We just did not know it yet.

How Dexter Came Home (The Tables Turn)

Here is where the story gets good.

Just three months after Shadow settled in, in January 2020, Angelo's wife — the same woman who had been skeptical about Shadow — came to him with news. A friend was giving away puppies. Pit Bull puppies. And she wanted one.

Angelo, to his credit, did not immediately say yes. There was some negotiation. Some begging, if we are being accurate. And eventually, the answer was yes — and Dexter came home at just nine weeks old, with paws the size of small dinner plates and absolutely no concept of his own size.

The woman who had been skeptical about getting a dog was now the reason they had two. And Dexter, from his very first day, knew exactly who his person was. He has followed her around ever since — this 115-pound giant of a dog, belly up, waiting for her to rub his stomach, looking for all the world like an enormous, lovable teddy bear who just happens to weigh as much as a grown adult.

Dexter: The Gentle Giant Who Destroys Everything He Loves

Dexter is the definition of a sweetheart. All cuddles and kisses and tail wags that could clear a coffee table in a single enthusiastic sweep. He is gentle, affectionate, and completely devoted to his family. He greets every person who walks through the door as though they are the most important visitor he has ever received, and he has never once met a belly rub he did not want more of.

He is also, without question, the most destructive force in our home.

Not out of malice — Dexter does not have a malicious bone in his enormous body. Out of pure, unbridled enthusiasm for life. He loved his things so much he loved them to pieces. Literally. By the time he was six months old, he had destroyed three beds, two harnesses, four leashes, and more toys than we could count. As he grew toward his eventual 115 pounds, the destruction scaled with him.

A toy that survived a week with Shadow would not survive an afternoon with Dexter. A bed that held up to Shadow's stress-chewing would be flattened into a pancake under Dexter's weight within days. We were replacing products constantly — and every time we replaced something, we tried to find something better. Something that would actually last.

We searched. We researched. We read reviews and compared materials and measured twice before ordering. And we found some things that worked — but finding them was exhausting, and the process of sorting through mediocre products to find the genuinely good ones felt like a full-time job on top of the full-time job of caring for two dogs with completely different needs.

The contrast between Shadow and Dexter also sharpened our understanding of what “good gear” actually means. For Shadow, good gear meant security, softness, and a perfect fit that could not be escaped. For Dexter, good gear meant construction that could withstand real force, hardware that would not fail under pressure, and materials that could survive contact with a dog who treated everything he owned as a beloved chew toy. A product that satisfied both of them was genuinely exceptional. We started keeping a mental list.

The Moment That Changed Everything

There is a specific moment we think about when we talk about why We Wagging Tails exists.

Dexter had just destroyed his third bed in two months — a bed marketed as indestructible, which, in retrospect, was an ambitious claim. Shadow was stress-chewing the corner of a toy that had already lost two squeakers and most of its stuffing. We were sitting on the floor surrounded by the wreckage, laughing — because what else do you do? — and also genuinely frustrated.

We had spent hundreds of dollars on products that did not deliver. We had wasted hours researching. We had trusted marketing claims that turned out to be fiction. And we thought: there have to be other dog parents going through exactly this. People with anxious rescues who need comfort and security. People with large breeds who need durability above all else. People who are tired of replacing things every few months and just want products that work.

What if we built something for them? What if we took everything we had learned — every product we had tested, every mistake we had made, every standard we had developed through trial and error — and made it available to other dog parents going through the same thing?

That question became a plan. That plan became We Wagging Tails. And today — with this blog, this store, and this community — we are just getting started.

 Golden Hour Walk — Joyful

The Shadow-and-Dexter Standard

Every product in our store is evaluated against what we call the Shadow-and-Dexter Standard: Would this keep Shadow safe and comfortable? Would it survive Dexter?

Those two questions cover an enormous amount of ground. Shadow's needs push products on fit, softness, and security. Dexter's needs push products on durability and construction quality. A product that passes both tests is genuinely exceptional — and those are the only products we carry.

We are selective by design. We would rather carry ten products we genuinely believe in than a hundred we are not sure about. When you buy from us, you are getting something that has been through our hands, tested on our dogs, and approved by a family that has spent years learning what actually works — through trial, error, and a truly impressive number of destroyed beds.

We are a family — and We Wagging Tails was built from our living room floor, out of real frustration and real love. When you shop with us, you are getting products we would put in front of Shadow and Dexter without hesitation. And behind every order is a family that genuinely cares about you and your dog.

Shadow came home on a spontaneous phone call in October 2019. Dexter came home three months later after some very effective begging. And We Wagging Tails came from all of it — from the chaos and the laughter and the destroyed beds and the unconditional love that filled nearly six years before we finally decided to build something worthy of it.

We are so glad you are here.
